The Volunteer Center's 2008 Nonprofit Board Leader Awardees

Ed Everett, Shelter Network

San Mateo County Awardee

Ed Everett has served on the Shelter Network board since 2002 and served as Board Chair from 2006 - 2007. Throughout his commitment with Shelter Network, the staff, board and volunteers have come to count on Ed for advice, a kind word or a helping hand. For the past 16 years, Ed has been Redwood City's City Manager and many commend him for the "renaissance of community-building" in the city. Whenever Ed is out and about, he spreads the word about Shelter Network, its mission and its programs. He has led tours of the organization's programs and never fails to take on the challenges and requests put to him as a board member. In the past two years, Ed has contributed over 465 volunteer hours to Shelter Network. Ed has been an energetic advocate for community building, affordable housing, and Shelter Network's mission. His leadership on the Board has been exemplary and he has always been a kind support to fellow board members, volunteers, clients and staff members alike. Ed has helped the organization grow both programmatically and in fundraising efforts. His dedication has directly translated into better, more comprehensive services for the homeless families and individuals served by Shelter Network. He's given the 'ask' speech on Shelter Network's behalf on many occasions, and his enthusiasm and passion for its mission resulted in record-breaking fundraising amounts in 2006 and the largest total fundraising amount for a single event in 2007. The Volunteer Center is extremely proud to honor Ed Everett's leadership of and commitment to the Shelter Network board of directors.

Carey Wintroub, Girls on the Run of the Bay Area

San Francisco County Awardee

Carey Wintroub has been a volunteer for Girls on the Run of the Bay Area since its inception. She founded the organization in 2002, and became Board Chair in 2003 after relinquishing her role as Founding Executive Director. Carey was inspired to establish Girls on the Run of the Bay Area when she learned of Girls on the Run International, at around the same time she qualified for the Boston Marathon. With no previous nonprofit experience, she contacted the national organization, set up the local organization's nonprofit 501(c)3 status, and began the program with five students at an East Bay school in the fall of 2002. Although curriculum was set at the national level, Carey was responsible for recruiting students and volunteer coaches, as well as Girls on the Run of the Bay Area's local marketing initiatives. By the spring of 2003, the program had reached 100 girls at six different schools, and it served 500 girls in its third year. The program continues to serve over 500 girls annually, and has roughly 500 active volunteers. Thanks to the strength of vision behind the organization, spearheaded by Carey, the impact in the community is significant. Her commitment has been vital to the sustainability of this small organization. She recruits board members from across a diverse spectrum, oversees the accounting and finances, and serves as a liaison between board and staff. Above all, she works tirelessly to keep the organization's goals clear and at the forefront of their activities. Her commitment and involvement in all levels of Girls on the Run of the Bay Area inspire the staff, board, volunteers and girls who make up the organization. The Volunteer Center is pleased to honor Carey Wintroub for her enthusiastic and inspiring board leadership.
