Risk Management and Young Volunteers

Have clear written policies and procedures.

  • Your policies should reduce risk and danger to all those involved.
  • Make up master charts that show where youth volunteers are working.
  • Provide parent release forms that describe the nature of the work; make sure you and the teacher agree upon the information provided in the permission slip.

When in doubt, check it out.

  • Call your insurance provider and find out if youth volunteers are included in your policy.
  • Discuss legal issues with the teacher and the school's legal advisor.

Take advantage of available resources:

  • Nonprofit Risk Management Center Find resources for all of your risk management needs at the Nonprofit Risk Management Center.
  • Publications specific to working with youth volunteers and risk management are available for purchase online.

  • Managing Volunteers Within the Law by Charles Tremper, Anna Seidman and Suzanne Tufts
  • Energize.com Find resources for all of your volunteer program management needs including helpful information for working with young volunteers.
