Information for Referring Professionals

Transitional volunteers are referred from professionals serving people with psychiatric, physical and cognitive disabilities. Eligible candidates must be at least 18 years old, have at least one psychiatric diagnosis and live or receive services in San Francisco.

If your client does not have a psychiatric diagnosis but is linked to services with the Department of Rehabilitation, he or she may be eligible for services.

If your client is under 18 years of age, please refer to Information for Youth Volunteers.

If you are a teacher, rehabilitation therapist, vocational specialist, counselor, social worker, or other professional serving people with special needs, your clients may benefit from the Transitional Volunteer Program (TVP).

We provide your clients with:

• Assessment
• Personalized volunteer placements
• Support and encouragement throughout the volunteer placement
• Communication between referring professionals and volunteer placement agencies
• Performance evaluations
• Support groups

How it works:

• Counselor and client fill out and send referral form to our program.
• Client attends program orientation: Orientations are scheduled every Tuesday from 11:00am-12:00pm (except holidays) at 1675 California Street (at Van Ness Avenue)
• Client meets one-on-one with a TVP counselor to explore volunteer opportunities that meet their skills and interests.
• TVP counselor will arrange interviews with potential volunteer managers.
• Placements normally occur within three weeks.

We ask you to provide us with:

• Assessment and referral information
• Ongoing support for the duration of the placement

Throughout the placement, we work with you, the volunteer, and volunteer managers to ensure a successful placement.
